Sharks rock out to AC/DC

According to a recent article in Australian Geographic great white sharks might be less blood-thirsty and more revelrous than previously believed.

Matt Waller, who runs Adventure Bay Charters in South Australia’s Neptune Bay, discovered that, after submerging waterproof speakers inside shark cages, certain songs completely altered shark behaviour.

Ok, ok, we'll listen to it again.
Ok, ok, we'll listen to it again.
AC/DC’s Shook Me All Night Long and Back in Black had the greatest effect, causing the sharks to swim up and rub their faces affectionately against the music source. The men in grey suits weren’t, however, overly impressed with the rest of Matt’s playlist.

Sharks don’t actually have ears but their super sensitive ampullae of lorenzini (electroreceptors in their nose) can detect a wide spectrum of electrical frequencies and vibrations. The mystery is: why AC/DC? It could be due to the low frequency guitars, gravelly vocals or maybe they just like Aussie rock.

Matt plans on testing a range of other bands including Led Zeppelin, the White Stripes and Wolfmother. Our tip is Rage Against the Machine – I’m sure they’ll have a good old face rub to Killing in the Name.

Speaker kits for surfboards anyone?
