Koloa Surf make seriously comfy t-shirts

Last updated:

We love surf apparel that is designed to last. The fast fashion industry has caused significant and sometimes irreversible damage to our planet. As consumers, it’s time to make better decisions and we think surf brands like Koloa Surf Company are paving the way. They are a Californian brand committed to creating long-lasting surf apparel – so we decided to check out what they offer.

When choosing a new item of long-lasting or sustainable clothing, one needs to consider a design that will never go out of style. Their Cocky Surfer collection appealed to this particular reviewer. Roosters are both loved and hated. Known as cockerels, they have bestowed their name upon all kinds of assertively-inclined things. Like a rooster crowing at dawn or protecting its patch, people unafraid to voice their opinion or strut their stuff have become widely known as “cocky”. Perhaps Twitter should have been called… Cocker? It’s a more appropriate name.

Being a cocky surfer means that you are prepared to paddle your way to the inside of a crowded lineup, catch a wave, paddle back out and do it again. There are lots of such individuals giving crowds a cock-a-doodle-do around the world. Being cocky is not a bad thing. It’s a mindset. There’s a time and a place for all kinds of behavior. Cockiness is a sign of vitality, of hope. I’ve seen roosters peck each other but ultimately remain on good terms. Disclaimer: I’m not a fowl psychologist but they seemed amicable enough.

Feeling a little cocky

The Koloa Surf Company T-Shirt Review

The Koloa Cocky Surfer design features a red, blue, and golden specimen, walking boldly forward, yet peering over its shoulder to make sure it is still king of the flock. It boasts a splendid comb (the red thingy sticking up from its head), which stands upright and proud, like a licking of flames. Its wattle (the thingy hanging from its chin) dangles full and proud. There’s not a hint of self-consciousness in this fighting fellow. To round out the scene, this proud poultry has taken a fine-looking surfboard under its wing. It’s not clear whether the board is short or long but it’s a fun-looking shape that would undoubtedly throw a few rooster tails under the right talons.

I chose the grey frost t-shirt, primarily because I have a tendency to spill and spillage is more obvious on plain color fabrics. Immediately I noticed the softness of the garment. It is made of 50% polyester with 25% each of combed ringspun cotton and rayon. I put the shirt on and didn’t take it off for three days. The verdict: this is a comfy shirt. In fact, it is called the Koloa Surf Company Comfort T-Shirt. It is lightweight and breathable – perfect for the individual who is cruising to check the surf and then decides to bust out a few push-ups on the boardwalk. Or who needs to unexpectedly flex those pecs in a carpark. Equally, this is the tee you’d choose for an afternoon nap in the sunshine or a bicycle ride with your chicks.

Going for a spin

The design is fun, it lets people know you’re both a surfer and not one to be messed with (or taken too seriously). We love the Koloa Surf design philosophy and sustainable approach to fashion. The shirt has been worn many more times and still looks as good as new. In fact, I’m wearing it right now… so cluck, cluck, cluck you.

About Koloa Surf Company

Founded in 2014, Koloa Surf Company is dedicated to providing its customers with the best products and services. Joe Nelson, the company’s owner, grew up loving Hawaiian culture. For several years, Joe would visit various islands in Hawaii. While traveling to different cities on the scenic island of Kauai, he came across Koloa. The historic town that he grew to love became his second home. Joe wanted to create a clothing brand that intermixed his appreciation for Hawaii and surfing. This motivated him to establish Koloa Surf Company. As the family-run business expanded, Joe knew he wanted to give back to the town that provided him so much. With that in mind, he continues to make generous donations to local charities. Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii- Kauai Branch, Kauai Habitat for Humanity, Junior Achievement, The Salvation Army, and Poipu Beach Rotary Club are a few charitable organizations the surf company supports.
