Surfing Samoa

If you are looking for an exotic surfing destination, Samoa should be it. With some of the most stunning islandscapes in the world, Samoa can easily be defined as “Paradise on Earth”.

It is located in the South Pacific Ocean, half way between New Zealand and Hawaii, with its two main islands representing 99% of the territory: Upolu and Savaii.

This country can offer world-class reef breaks for those surfers wanting to wear their boardies in uncrowded line-ups. Beyond the boat trips provided by the resorts, there are plenty of empty waves just waiting for the adventurous who are keen to rent a car and go exploring. There is the real potential to score the barrels of your life, with no crowds and no hassle.

Samoa is cheaper than most of its Polynesian neighbours and it is also a place where you can take your girlfriend. The food is delicious, the ocean is warm, the palm trees sway in the (hopefully) offshore breeze. She will be waiting for you on pristine, white sandy beaches, possibly with a cocktail in hand. Samoans are also famous for loving children, so bring the kiddies – and you won’t see them again until you leave. They’ll learn more Samoan language than you ever will!

Beyond the surf, save some energy so you can go exploring waterfalls and snorkelling the coral gardens.

The only cons in Samoa are the tides; you can’t surf at low tide, in many locations. The waves get super hollow and shallow, making surfing extremely dangerous, unless you have the skills of a pro. Local surf guides will be able to help you score waves for your skill level, so ask around and bring reef boots if you’re nervous!

If you are planning your next surf trip and you want to avoid the crowds, Samoa is waiting for you.
