A Brief History of Z-Flex

Last updated:

If you skate then you probably know about Z-Flex skateboards. Even if you don’t know the brand you’ll almost certainly have heard of the Z-Boys of Dogtown. A 2001 documentary highlighted how a group of surfing free skaters almost singlehandedly created the skate subculture. Attacking abandoned (and not-so-abandoned) pools with a radical new approach created a niche for the sensational Zephyr crew. It was anti-establishment, aggressive and alluring. .

Z-Flex is the skate brand conceived during the era of the Zephyr Surfboard Production surf shop. They not only pioneered urethane wheels but, amongst other things,  invented the concave deck, as seen on virtually every modern skateboard.

Their team spans three generations and includes names such as Jay Adams, Tony Alva, David Hackett, Jim Muir George Wilson, Dennis “Polar Bear”Agnew, Jimmy Plumer, Jimmy Acosta, Butch Sterbins, George Watanabe and Aaron Scott.

Now is a good time to check out the feature video above. It’s a good one.

If you’re not already a skater then you’re probably here because you’re looking to get in on some road action. Skating is good cross-training for wave riders, not to mention a hell of a lot of fun. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the surfer in your life (and that may well be yourself)  then visit zflexonline.com for some eye candy and ideas.
