The Hollywood cliché has surfers born in boardshorts and living in a permanent state of beach-ready. In reality, surfers wear more than shorts and a tan — some have even been sighted wearing, gasp, shoes. But there is a surfer look, and once you know it you'll spot it in any car park from Raglan to Hossegor: relaxed, functional, understated, a little sun-faded, with an undertone of "I might paddle out any minute now."

The three surfer looks

Beach. Performance first: boardshorts, a UPF top or rash vest, a surf hat that stays on, zinc, flip flops that survive salt. Everything here should dry fast and take a beating.

Day. Not a boardshort in sight. A pocket tee or over-shirt, shorts or slim jeans, slides or skate shoes, good sunglasses. Colours are muted — sand, navy, faded black, olive — which is why one bright accessory pops. This is where most surfers live most of the time.

Night. Sophistication first, surfing second. If you've ever been to a nightclub in Bali you'll know fashion isn't a priority for surfers on tour, but the modern version — an oxford or clean tee, chinos, a leather belt, real shoes — says errant free thinker with a sense of style. Look closely and you might spot a small Reef or Outerknown logo. The rest is understated.

What real surfers don't wear
