If you’re looking to purchase surf gear or apparel online then you’ll discover a wide range of options available to you with a simple Google search (maybe that’s how you found us!).
Buying surf fashion can be tricky unless you already know that specific brand sizing will fit. However, most retailers have return policies, especially when it comes to fashion items.
We live in the digital age and there are significant advantages as a retailer in not having a physical storefront. In the old days we used to wait with great anticipation for the new season tees and boardshorts to appear in the window of the local surf shop. We’d agonise over a pair of trunks, or a new rash guard, or a new surfboard.
Now the world is quite literally at our fingertips and we can purchase direct from the surf brands, online surf shops and even manufacturers in China.
The real difference is price. You’ll save when buying online, but you also miss out on the surf shop experience: surf videos playing on screens, polished boards on racks, the smell of wax. Are brick and mortar surf shops a thing of the past? We hope not.
But in the meanwhile, here is a list of some of the best online surf shops.
When sustainability meets high performance and still manages to look good then you’re onto a winning formula. We love the Patagonia activist vision almost as much as their great products. The Yulex range of wetsuits is an incredible achievement.
Patagonia, Inc. is an American clothing company that markets and sells outdoor clothing. The company was founded by Yvon Chouinard in 1973, and is based in Ventura, California.
Patagonia grew out of a small company that made tools for climbers. Alpinism remains at the heart of a worldwide business that still makes clothes for climbing—as well as for skiing, snowboarding, surfing, fly fishing, mountain biking and trail running. These are silent sports. None require an engine; rarely do they deliver the cheers of a crowd. In each, reward comes in the form of hard-won grace and moments of connection with nature.
‘Our values reflect those of a business started by a band of climbers and surfers, and the minimalist style they promoted. The approach we take toward product design demonstrates a bias for simplicity and utility.’
Like Patagonia, Outerknown is a brand that values sustainable supply chains, quality products and fair remuneration for employees – even in developing countries where much of the product is sourced and manufactured. Founded by Kelly Slater as an alternative to the big brand status quo, Outerknown has quickly developed a reputation for stylish premium surf fashion that lasts for years, if not decades.
In 2015, professional surfer Kelly Slater and creative director John Moore set out to change the clothing industry. Both surfers wanted to wear clothing that was made better, looked better, and fit better than what they grew up with. Prior to shipping our first product, they spent over two years searching for the right partners that shared their values. After 28 months of visiting makers around the world, Outerknown was born.
The Fair Labor Association (FLA) holds brands to the highest international labor standards. Outerknown was the first brand to pursue accreditation before selling a stitch of clothing.
‘When I finished my former sponsorship to start Outerknown, I challenged my partners to create a pioneering new company that made great clothes with a radical commitment to sustainability. Five years later, Outerknown is proving that you don’t have to compromise on sustainability or style.’ – Kelly Slter

“Backcountry.com began in 1996 with two guys, a stack of avalanche beacons, and a garage in Park City, Utah. Our roots were humble, and we’ve grown since then, but our vision is still clear: to provide the best outdoor gear—and to be the best at doing it.”

Maui and Sons
Bright and bold colors with a fun selection of clothing and functional surf gear – Maui and Sons is a great place to go if you want to buy a gift for a surfer in your life or simply treat yourself.
About Maui and Sons
“While we didn’t get our start as the fun-loving activewear brand we’re known as today; we’ve been all about the good things in life since day one.
Stoked on his family’s home-made chocolate chip cookies, Jeff Yokoyama (aka Yoki) was inspired to spread joy across the island of Maui through the family recipe, and in 1980 Maui and Sons was born. When the journey met a fork in the road, Yoki went with the flow, embarked on a new adventure, and took the famed cookie logo designed by friend and fellow surfer Rick Rietveld along for the ride.
Following in the footsteps of entrepreneurs who pour their energy into their passion, Yoki turned to action sports apparel, placed the cookie logo where he was told he couldn’t – the back pocket – and the innovative Maui and Sons madras surf short was an instant success. If you’re of the right age, you’ve likely seen quite a few pairs in the line-up while you were waiting for a wave (if you weren’t wearing a pair yourself).”
Surfstitch is a well-known online surf shop that emerged over a decade ago in Sydney, Australia. They transformed the online shopping experience for surfers by providing a quality website and huge selection of products. They consistently offer special offers, including vouchers for first time buyers and have good deals on shipping (free to Aus and NZ if you spend over a specific threshold, flat rate to global destinations). Evo strives to make lives better by crafting elevated customer and employee experiences, fostering human connection and igniting passions, while leveraging our success to give back.
People often asked why I started evo and when it started, and I’ve always held that the path of our business is intertwined in our personal journeys. The reality is that in a sense, the inspiration for evo existed long before 2001. My Uncle Jack introduced me to skiing in grade school, and I’ve been doing everything that I can to participate ever since. Selling gear as a little kid provided the means to buy lift tickets and access this amazing experience, and for over 30 years now, evo really has been a story of one thing leads to another. From hustling to buy a lift ticket, to eventually getting the chance to chase winters worldwide, evo has opened doors to a world of sport and culture that I could have never imagined. As we move ahead, the desire to share that same experience drives our site, our stores and most of all, our evoTrip adventure travel vacations – our opportunity to introduce customers to these amazing sports and culture experiences around the world.

We strive to deliver an unsurpassed and indelible experience to our customers, create an extraordinary place for our dedicated employees that allows them to live with purpose and fulfillment, and leverage our success to give back to causes and communities in order to make the world a better place. We are proud and honored to have stoked out over 2 million customers worldwide.
Born in the small dusty Great Plains town of Redfield, South Dakota, Don Hansen the founder of Hansen Surfboards was taught about down home family traditions and the value of a hard days work at an early age.
While attending classes at The University of South Dakota in the late 1950’s Don was introduced to the art of wave sliding via classic surf films by two brothers who were attending USD from Southern California. Transfixed by the images of the soulful surfers, Don would soon find that sweating away summers doing manual labor in the Mid-West held no flame to the idea of riding waves with friends in the warm California sun. With a lot of courage and a little bit of money, Don decided he had enough of being land locked and bravely hitch hiked his way to Coronado, where he would indulge in the surf lifestyle and begin his journey into surfboard manufacturing.

‘We got our start in 2007, hand-shaping surfboards that we hoped would be lasting quality and function. We have been continuing to refine and perfect our process ever since. We truly hope that the surfboards we build today will be passed down as heirlooms to the next generation.
