Removable surfboard fins were a revolution when they arrived in the 90s. Suddenly we could travel without snapped skegs and we could transform surfboard performance with a click and a screw. Fin systems quickly became the norm and only a few outliers like Taj Burrows stuck to glassed-in fins.
Future Fins was founded in 1996 with the goal of providing the best fin system available. Two camps developed – either you were FCS or Futures. Much like Nikon vs Canon, or Kelly vs Andy – once you made a choice it was likely you’d stay. Surfers made new board selections based purely on fin system compatibility.
The FCS people started hearing stories about the ease of Futures – simply click them in, no screws needed. Sounded like fantasy – but it was real. Read the complete history of FCS below.
