Los Angeles, July 27, 2023 – The wave-rich village of Teahupoo, located on Tahiti Island and earmarked as the future surfing competition site for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has rolled out the welcome mat for its annual surfing competition, the Outerknown Tahiti Pro. Marked by cultural performances and traditional dance, this event holds a special place in the cultural calendar of French Polynesia, also known as The Islands of Tahiti. The event will be held from Fri, Aug 11, 2023 – Sun, Aug 20, 2023.
As we look forward to next year’s Paris 2024 Olympic Games, all eyes are on Teahupo’o’s legendary waves, arguably among the world’s deadliest and most iconic. This swell provides a global platform for local surfers to compete with world-class talent right in their backyard – the birthplace of surfing, the Polynesian islands.
Teahupo’o’s wave will provide the thrilling backdrop to the 10th and final stage of the World Surf League’s (WSL) World Tour. This awe-inspiring wave, capable of towering up to 50 feet, poses a formidable challenge to even the world’s best surfers, thanks to its raw power and treacherous reef break.
In The Islands of Tahiti, surfing has evolved from a local pastime to a significant economic sector, with revenue generated from product retail and numerous surfing schools. More than a sport, it is a cultural emblem, symbolizing the athletic prowess and harmonious relationship with nature inherent to the Polynesian people.

Destination: Teahupo’o, Tahiti
Renowned for its remarkable wave riding, Teahupo’o, a village on the southwestern coast of Tahiti in the southern Pacific Ocean, is often graced with 6 to 10 feet, and sometimes even 23 feet, glassy offshore waves. The wave’s unique form, caused by an extremely shallow coral reef, creates a hollow-breaking wave, adding to Teahupo’o’s surfing allure.
